On Call Shifts

Roster staff for standby and after-hours cover with a dedicated on call shift type

Written by Zac Low

Overview

On Call is a shift type that lets you roster staff for standby or after-hours cover. On call shifts can be assigned on their own, or combined with standard shifts when someone is working a regular shift and covering on call as well.

Enabling On Call Shifts

On Call is enabled per location:

  1. Go to your location settings

  2. Enable the On Call feature

Once enabled, an On Call tab will appear in your location's navigation bar as a new page. This is where you'll set up and manage your on call shifts.

Setting Up an On Call Shift

An on call shift is made up of a start time and an end time, defining the period the employee is on standby.

You can also bind an on call shift to:

  • Specific skills, so only staff with the required skills can be assigned

  • Specific shifts, tying the on call period to particular shifts

  • Shift groups, tying the on call period to a group of shifts

This gives you control over who can be rostered on call and how on call cover relates to the rest of your roster.

Assigning On Call Shifts

When assigning an on call shift, you have two options:

  • On its own: Assign an on call shift as a standalone shift, for example overnight or weekend standby cover.

  • Combined with a standard shift: Assign an on call shift alongside a standard shift, for staff who are working a regular shift and remaining on call afterwards.

  • On call will be excluded from normal contractual hours.

What Employees See

On call shifts appear in the employee app distinctly labelled as on call, so staff can tell at a glance whether they're rostered for a standard shift or on standby.

If an employee is assigned both a regular shift as well as an on call on the same day they will both be visible in the employees allocation.
