Pattern rules are template-based custom constraints that let you control what combinations of shifts employees can or cannot work over specific time windows.

What They Do

Pattern rules let you say things like:

  • "AM shift should only be worked within the following 1 weeks pattern, which start on any day."

  • "Nights must only be worked within the following 2 weeks pattern, which start on any day by staff with PM Nurse skill."

Key Features

Set Pattern Strength

  • Must = Hard rule (roster will fail if it can't be met)

  • Must (if able) = Hard rule (roster will only violate it in the case a roster cannot be generated)

  • Should = Soft rule (roster will try to follow it but can break it if needed)

Set Pattern Time Windows

You can apply patterns over:

  • 1 week windows

  • 2 week windows

  • 4 week windows

What You Can Control

Pattern rules can combine the below to determine a workable or forbidden pattern for employees:

  • Specific shifts (e.g., "AM", "Nights", "on")

  • Shift groups (e.g., "Night shifts")

  • Days off

  • Staff skills

  • Combinations of the above

  • Variations within a set pattern

How To Add a Set Pattern

To add a Set Pattern rule, navigate to Rules page and click 'Add Pattern' button

Once Set Pattern is added, description and shift detail, length, and skill-specific attributes can be added from the drop-down menu.

Pattern Variations can be added to support additional variation of the same workable/forbidden shift patterns.
